Cégep à distance Marks Another Major Milestone in the Overhaul of its Digital Environments
Montréal, April 7, 2014 – Cégep à distance has marked another major milestone in the overhaul of its digital environments. Cégep à distance management recently announced the kickoff of a major project to develop a new learning environment for its students.
The learning environment is at the heart of the student experience at Cégep à distance: it is the way the students access their courses and other online learning resources, submit their assignments and carry out various administrative operations.
“Since our students are all distance students, the quality and agility of the study environment at their disposal is crucial to their academic perseverance and success,” explained Louis-René Dessureault, director of Cégep à distance. “A stimulating, user-friendly web environment has a positive impact on motivation and perseverance, both significant issues in distance education. It fosters the success of our students, who may sometimes feel isolated in their progress.” Student success and the overhaul of the digital environment are fundamental planks in the Cégep à distance positioning plan for the years ahead.
The new environment will be developed with Moodle, which is already well-known in the CEGEP network. The platform will require a fair amount of customization to adapt it to the reality of Cégep à distance courses, however, as most are offered in self-study form with personalized support. “Our digital environment will be far more than a virtual discussion platform or document depository,” pointed out Daniel Beaudoin, assistant director in the Design and Production Department. “In addition to the student’s learning path, there will also be different types of teaching activities based on individual and collaborative online learning. And it will be interlinked with the teaching management system, which is also being rolled out.”
The first series of courses will be available in the new learning environment toward the end of 2014, and the entire Cégep à distance course offer will be gradually integrated in 2015.
Cégep à distance is an integral part of the Collège de Rosemont, offering programs in French that lead to a diploma of college studies (DEC, for its French acronym) or an attestation of college studies (AEC, for its French acronym). Some courses are also offered in English. Every year, some 18,000 people register for one or more of the 140 credit courses offered in French and English, for a total of 28,000 course registrations. All courses are offered in the continuous registration model.
