New web platform: Cégep à distance ouvert – Québec’s first CEGEP MOOC launched
Montréal, June 4, 2014 – Cégep à distance unveiled Québec’s very first CEGEP-level MOOC (Massive Open and Online Course) today. At the occasion of the Association québécoise de pédagogie collégiale (AQPC) colloquium, Cégep à distance presented its first open online course, the new Cégep à distance ouvert web platform (http://ouvert.cegepadistance.ca) and a video on Un corps en équilibre, c’est vital! – Introduction à la biologie humaine (A body in balance is vital: Introduction to human biology). The course will be available at the end of August.
This MOOC is the first in a series that Cégep à distance will offer to anyone who wants to develop specific competencies and knowledge. The initiative will also support success and professional development and meet needs that arise through specific social issues.
“Cégep à distance ouvert is the perfect expression of our mission and mandate toward the CEGEP network and the community. By offering courses that are open to everyone and developing teaching and learning resources, Cégep à distance and CETEND (centre for e-learning and distance education expertise and transfer) ensure that the expertise developed through this innovative project will be effectively transferred. We are also very proud to offer Quebecers their first CEGEP-level MOOC in a field that affects the entire population,” announced Cégep à distance director Louis-René Dessureault.
The MOOC is for high-school graduates who intend to study science or health techniques and want to assess their knowledge in this discipline. It is also ideal for CEGEP health sciences students who want to reinforce their learning. Finally, it is also open to anyone looking for a better understanding of the human body in order to make the best choices for their health.
Structured in four modules with a total duration of ten hours, the course will be given over four weeks by Véronique Campbell, Ph.D. in biology from the Université de Montréal and a biology teacher at the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe. The content focuses on developing a systematic understanding of the human body by exploring everything from components that are invisible to the naked eye – cells and molecules – to its larger structures, organs and systems.
