Some students who find themselves in this situation wrongly believed that what they were doing was acceptable. We therefore encourage you to read this page carefully to avoid situations that may stand in the way of your success.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Examples of plagiarism and fraud<\/h2>\n<p><span>This is what our\u00a0<i>Politique institutionnelle d\u2019\u00e9valuation des apprentissages<\/i> (PIEA)* says about plagiarism and fraud (section 7.3.11).<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"box\"><span>Students commit or attempt to commit an act of plagiarism or fraud when they do one of the following (the list is not exhaustive):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the work of another person, whether in whole or in part, and attempt to pass it off as their own.<\/li>\n<li>Copy passages from books, websites, textbooks, another person\u2019s work, or any type of document written by another person, and attempt to pass it off as their own without citing the source or by citing an incorrect source; this applies to both oral and written projects.<\/li>\n<li>Replace another person or be replaced by someone else for a summative evaluation.<\/li>\n<li>Fabricate or change sources, data, results, or analyses.<\/li>\n<li>Hand in work that another person or they themselves have already submitted for grading (for example, an assignment that was previously submitted for another course).<\/li>\n<li>Communicate with anyone other than the invigilator during an exam.<\/li>\n<li>Help another person to copy from an assignment or an exam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>Measures and sanctions<\/h2>\n<p><span>C\u00e9gep \u00e0 distance applies the following measures and sanctions when plagiarism or fraud are discovered (section 7.3.11 of the\u00a0<i>Politique institutionnelle d\u2019\u00e9valuation des apprentissages<\/i>\u00a0[PIEA]*):<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"box\"><span>a) If there is any reasonable doubt concerning the authenticity of the work submitted by a student,\u00a0 C\u00e9gep \u00e0 distance reserves the right to have that student take a supervised test or any other procedure it deems necessary.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>b) The penalties for plagiarism, forgery, cheating, and fraud are commensurate with the seriousness of the offence committed, and the maximum penalty (i.e., permanent expulsion from\u00a0 C\u00e9gep \u00e0 distance) may be imposed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>c) In the case of a repeat offence, the maximum penalty shall be imposed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>d) Before a penalty is imposed on them, anyone accused of plagiarism or fraud shall be informed, in writing, by the C\u00e9gep \u00e0 distance management, of the accusation and of their right to be heard, in accordance with procedures and within the prescribed time periods.<\/span><\/aside>\n<h2>A few examples<\/h2>\n<p><span>Here are some actions that constitute plagiarism or fraud. Please note that these examples do not cover all possible situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th valign=\"top\">\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Situation<\/b><\/p>\n<\/th>\n<th valign=\"top\">\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Plagiarism or fraud<\/b><\/p>\n<\/th>\n<th valign=\"top\">\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Appropriate behaviour<\/b><\/p>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span>I have a study partner who is taking the same course as me and we write our assignments together.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span>To understand the questions, we do our assignments at the same time and write more or less the same answers.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span>We are both taking the same course and we study together to make sure we understand the hard parts, but when we do our assignments, we each do our own to make sure we are not copying each other\u2019s answers.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span>I use someone else\u2019s text, reformulating it in my own words without providing a reference.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span>I found a text somewhere and I just use the thoughts and ideas. I do not copy word-for-word.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span>The paraphrase must also be referenced. I reference the text I used for inspiration.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span>I copy excerpts from a book, website, textbook, person, or any document written by another person, passing it off as my own without citing the source or by providing the wrong source (written or oral work).<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span>I find a website with sentences that support what I want to say. I copy them.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span>I copy the text but I put it in quotes and I provide the source. (To learn the right way to cite sources, I use the resources available online or in the library.)<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span>Of course, this is just to support my own words.\u00a0<\/span><b>I do not use quotes for my entire assignment.<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span>I just use the authorized exam materials (including dictionaries, conjugation primers, grammar books, literary works, or any other material allowed in the exam), but I put in handwritten or other notes.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span>I write extra information in the dictionary I bring to the exam.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span>Before coming to the exam, I make sure there are no extra pages of notes in my documents, that the notes in my literary works are just reading notes, not theoretical notes on how to structure a dissertation or on the course in general, and that there is nothing written in my dictionary, related to this exam or otherwise.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>* C\u00e9gep \u00e0 distance is part of the C\u00e9gep de Rosemont.
