What is motivation?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Motivation is a <b><i>psychological process<\/i><\/b> underpinned by factors that influence behaviour, especially <b><i>level of commitment<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>to a given activity. It is a force that pushes us to <b><i>take action<\/i><\/b> in a situation (Deci &amp; Ryan, 2000). Because it is self-determined, it is stronger than extrinsic motivation, which is influenced by external factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">But it is completely normal to draw on both these types of motivation throughout your journey as a student.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span><b>EXAMPLE<\/b><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ICON_Motivation_Gene.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" max-width=\"100%\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16627 size-full\" align=\"right\" valign=\"top\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Charlie has always been really interested in biology, and he likes helping people. He is fascinated by hospitals. So he decided to become a nurse: this relates back to his <b>interests<\/b>, and he also gets great <b>grades<\/b> in chemistry and biology.<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">He is enrolled in nursing sciences at c\u00e9gep, and he is on cloud nine in all his concentration courses. But he is having trouble in his literature class. He has never been crazy about stories or novels. He doesn\u2019t understand how the course requirements will help him become a better nurse.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">For him, it is getting increasingly difficult to work on this particular course. He knows, though, that if he wants to get his nursing licence, he has to earn his college diploma. That means passing all his general courses, including his literature courses.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ICON_Motivation_Infirmier.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" max-width=\"100%\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16626\" align=\"right\" \/><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Charlie\u2019s <b>INTRINSIC MOTIVATION<\/b> is related to his enthusiasm for the nursing sciences and personal values of helping people, science and human relations. His motivation is linked directly to his own traits, which means he is highly motivated and engaged during his nursing science courses. Moreover, because he is doing well in those courses, he has confidence in his abilities, which further increases his intrinsic motivation toward his professional goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Passing his literature courses requires <b>EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION<\/b>, because Charlie has little interest in them and, on top of that, he is having trouble. He does not feel engaged in the subject matter, and he is trying to motivate himself the best he can by avoiding failure and fulfilling the course requirements. He reminds himself about his professional goal, which he can only achieve if he gets his DEC.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ICON_Amotivation_EN-e1651247684757.png\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ICON_Amotivation_EN-e1651247684757.png\" alt=\"The text appearing in the image is available below.\" width=\"1497\" max-width=\"100%\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16630 size-full\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<div class=\"lbo-toggle-box\">\n<h3>What is amotivation?<\/h3>\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Lack of motivation, resignation and apathy. The values, skills and goals that would allow you to mobilize the energy required to accomplish the actions are not clear enough or simply missing. In cases like this, you should clarify your study plan or your professional plan by contacting an academic advisor or guidance counsellor. Personal or psychological difficulties, such as depression or anxiety, can also have this effect. Reach out to the resources available to you if you feel the need to talk about your motivation problems.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">REFLECTION EXERCISE <\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Take a moment to reflect on your <b><i>academic and professional goals<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Are they clear? Are they connected to your skills, your values and your interests? What aspects of the courses you have taken and the way C\u00e9gep \u00e0 distance operates can help or hinder your motivation?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">1) <\/span><b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">What is your professional goal?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>2) <b>Why are you studying?<br \/>\n<\/b><i><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Example: To get the job I want, to improve my working conditions, to continue doing my sport .\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">3) <b>Why are you studying at C\u00e9gep \u00e0 distance?<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">What do you see as the advantages of studying at C\u00e9gep \u00e0 distance?<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">What are the disadvantages?\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">4) <b>Which course motivates you the most?<\/b><b>\u00a0 Why?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">5) <b>Which course motivates you the least?<\/b><b> Why? Is there a resource that could help you?<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Example: Philosophy. It\u2019s complicated and useless. Getting a good grade on my assignment. Thinking about my future plans. Studying with a friend. Finding things pointless. Fatigue.<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">8) <b>What value can you find in the course(s) you find less motivating?<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Example: Philosophy can help me assess difficult situations in my future job as a nurse. Understanding the past helps me figure out what to aim for in the present.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. <span lang=\"EN-CA\">What is procrastination?<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">According to the <i>Canadian Oxford Dictionary<\/i>, to procrastinate means to delay or postpone action. Procrastination is often supported by pretexts that give us an excuse for not doing what we have to do: fatigue, boredom, stress, anxiety, discouragement, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">But the desire to postpone things until later is often hiding .\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Fear of failure, difficulty or success.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Lack of motivation, due to a lack of interest or a vague academic path.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Trouble concentrating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Overwork (fatigue).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Lack of pleasure or immediate reward.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">The procrastination cycle is triggered when it is time to take action and accomplish tasks (Coll\u00e8ge de Rosemont, 2021). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ICON_Cycle_procrastination_EN.png\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ICON_Cycle_procrastination_EN.png\" alt=\"The text appearing in the image is available below.\" width=\"1920\" max-width=\"100%\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16629\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<div class=\"lbo-toggle-box\">\n<h3><b>The Procrastination Cycle<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">When you have a task to accomplish, it can bring on feelings such as anxiety, fatigue, boredom, discouragement or discomfort. So you may look for ways to avoid those feelings and get temporary relief by using excuses or thoughts to avoid the task, such as telling yourself that you still have lots of time or that you are not feeling inspired just then. You might also use distractions such as the internet, video games, friends, sleeping, housework, eating, etc. This means you postpone the task and then suffer the emotional or practical consequences. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">How can you break this cycle?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Identify the tasks you want to put off until tomorrow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Try to understand the feeling that the task brings up for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Identify your fears and examine them. If it is too hard to confront them on your own, speak to a professional.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Recognize the sources of distraction around you and minimize them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Use strategies that foster action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>3. <span lang=\"EN-CA\">Tools and techniques for getting motivated<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<h3>SMART goals<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ICON_Motivation_SMART_EN.png\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ICON_Motivation_SMART_EN.png\" alt=\"The text appearing in the image is available below.\" width=\"1198\" max-width=\"100%\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16623\" \/><\/a><div class=\"lbo-toggle-box\">\n<h3><b>SMART goals<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Set SMART goals for yourself. S is for specific, M is for measurable, A is for achievable, R is for relevant and T is for timely. This is a matter of subdividing responsibilities into specific tasks to foster motivation and action. Look at the tree, rather than the forest, and even the leaf, rather than the tree.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Specific:<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-CA\"> A goal is specific if it is detailed and targeted, so there is no doubt whatsoever about the exact task to accomplish. A specific goal is a goal that has ONE SINGLE PURPOSE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Measurable: <\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">A goal is measurable when it can be quantified and you can objectively observe that it has been achieved. A measurable goal provides an INDICATOR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Achievable:<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-CA\"> A goal is achievable when it can reasonably be accomplished without too many \u201csacrifices.\u201d This kind of goal takes your capacities and context into account. It is connected to your MEANS and COMPETENCIES. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Relevant: <\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">A goal is relevant when it contributes meaningfully and logically to the target outcome. A relevant goal is an APPROPRIATE STEP toward the overall objective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Timely: <\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-CA\">A goal is timely when it takes the limited time available into consideration. A timely goal allows you to set a DEADLINE for achieving it. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ICON_Motivation_Pomodoro.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" max-width=\"100%\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16625\" align=\"right\" \/><b>POMODORO technique<\/b> \u2014 Time management method<\/h3>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Take short, frequent breaks to maintain your concentration<b> (for example, 10- to 15-minute break after 45 minutes to an hour of study). <\/b>\u200b<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Focus 100% of your attention on the task. \u200b<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Hide your phone.
