Student Café chat room: Support to learning

In general, student cafés associated with various courses quickly disappear, as if the students could not find anything to hang on to. It is because of this that this café is a continuity of the collaboration and spirit of mutual help that developed in the pedagogical chat room of the mathematics course that we decided to introduce it to you. Here, too, the messages are presented integrally, with mistakes in English.

Aimed mainly at encouraging socialization, the student café, initially, was used by certain students to freely and spontaneously express what they felt (this café is boring, certain parts of the course are difficult, and so on). With time, this chat room became a meeting place for motivation, help in persevering, mutual help and stress management, faced with the final examination.

As you read these messages, you will quickly see the importance and power of the emotional dimension in learning.

I can say that this is really not like your standard CEGEP. The title says we’re here to make friends, but I don’t think that that’s the case. School, now, that’s where it’s more fun. It’s the only place except work (but that’s another story) that you rub shoulders with people all day. Although it’s a course where we’re only in contact by pieces of metallic wire, we could make a little effort to share our lives other than our life at school???
Anyways, it’s your own fault if you don’t have fun while you’re learning.

I may have seemed kinda distant for not using the student cafe before today. It’s just that I’ve really been rushing around these last months (work, intensive French courses and review of my sec 5 math). You may not believe this, but I’ve just finished my first assignment!!! You don’t know how happy I am and that’s why I could not stop myself from writing to you. I’m going to do everything I can to contact you now because my new boss is unemployment; and work hours are not his thing HA HA HA!!!
BTW, I want to thank Claire for helping me out.

Hello everybody,
I’m happy to see that now there is more communication among students, I think that it’s a good way for you to encourage each other and to know that you can help each other out, if you write a few words to each other whenever you do work on the site.
Have a good day everybody.

Hey! Vincent! Are you a visionary and a magician? I’d be the first to ask you to put a spell on me that’ll make me finish and post my assignments every two weeks.
Thanks for your little message of encouragement. See you!

  Assignment 4

Answer
Hello everybody!
It’s good to know that others are on chap. 4, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s not that easy. I’ve only got a few weeks left to finish three chapters and prepare for the exam. There’s some advice I have to give everybody who still has a lot of time left (to everybody, actually): plan, and above all, stick to your schedule!!!

Hello Hello!
I haven’t come by here for a little while now… I see that the new people are not any more talkative than we were at the beginning! I hope they’ll come to understand that good communication is vital to their success...

Hello everybody,
The jazz festival is starting and I’m not going to miss my favourite artist…
Well concerning your mark of 100%, congrats) !!! It’s with perseverance that we can overcome the worst difficulties and I congratulate you, if your parents haven’t already done it, I give you a big hug (isn’t it worth at least a little virtual hug) and good luck at university, who knows maybe we’ll see each other in the halls. Well, enough chatting, I have to go back to chapter 1, hmm seems like it’s taking a long time…

  Exam
  Vincent

Answer
I know that Paula might think that I’m kind of a pain, but I’d like to talk about the exam again… I read Steve’s message (Mister 100%), and I thought that it would be nice if the students that passed the exam would tell us how they feel, whether it was more or less difficult than the assignments, and what part of the course was emphasized…
Anyway, the usual information we share at school =]
ps: From a more personal point of view, I still have 7 days to study before my exam (whoo hoo)... and I’m panicking (hmm, that’s normal for me)…
Vincent

Answer
You are right, Vincent. I’ll ask the students to talk a bit more and to relieve a little of your stress. Right now, I can’t contact them because they no longer read their messages; they are finished. I’ll try to take their place. The exam is less difficult than the assignments, according to me. There are fewer algebraic operations…
On a more personal level: You’re panicking! Relax! You have good results on your assignments. The exam will not be a surprise, but rather a repetition of what you’ve already done. To prepare, you will find all the pertinent information on the site. I’ll help you to browse…
I’m anxious to correct your exam. I’ll give you your mark in MESSAGING, as soon as I get your exam and correct it.

A little weight I was feeling on my shoulders...
  Serge

Answer
Hey everybody! I just finished my exam 30 minutes ago. A little weight I was feeling on my shoulders has finally lifted. Unfortunately, this little weight was not welcome because I was expecting to end my existence this evening and it wasn’t the case at any time. The exam is very straightforward, no surprises, no ambiguities, and not too long (I know what I’m talking about because I’m the kind who always makes the teachers wait during exams because I’m never finished). Anyway, I’ll give you some news when I get my mark… Bye for now, and don’t give up, if I can do it, anybody can do it!

Answer
How was your incredible adventure? As far as I’m concerned (I sat for the exam on the 21st), I think it went very well (yesssssss), well, I wasn’t expecting that…
The questions are very clear and precise, even more than in the assignments… It’s really fine, it covers all the subject matter well without going into details or problems such as “lets go, why not take the whole page (then your equations take more than a page and every line too) to do the derivative…”
It’s a pretty good exam, if you reviewed all the aspects but you don’t master everything to absolute perfection (my personal case), you’ll have a good mark anyway since you do master all the subject matter… I hope this helps/encourages you...
ciao!

Answer
Hey group!
I did the exam last night. During the day I was really nervous. Mastering 7 chapters, that’s no small potatoes (at CEGEP exams are not cumulative). I even thought of cancelling my exam… But in the end, it went well! I’m even sure that I passed. It’s a really good exam. Not too long, not too hard, medium difficulty! (It seems like they’ve taken the amount of subject matter to study into consideration)
So now I’ve got 2 days off that were well deserved… I’m starting CEGEP Monday…
Nathalie
